Breaking Down Barriers: Why Many Choose Streets Over Shelters

Have you ever wondered why some individuals experiencing homelessness choose to remain on the streets despite the dangers and discomforts, rather than utilizing available shelters?

According to the latest report by the Government of Canada, there were 518 emergency shelters with 18,467 beds available as of 2022. Despite over 100,000 individuals experiencing homelessness that year, the average shelter occupancy was only 88.6%, not reaching full capacity.

While shelters play a crucial role in providing immediate relief, many individuals face challenges that prevent them from using these facilities. This highlights the urgent need for affordable housing, which not only alleviates the burden on shelters but also provides individuals with a safe, stable environment. Here are three key reasons why some individuals might avoid shelters and why affordable housing is essential:

Safety Concerns

For some, staying in a shelter can pose safety risks. In April, CBC reported that Toronto officials are working on a plan to increase safety in the city shelter system in response to rising incidents of violence against shelter residents and workers. These challenges are not just internal; external factors such as hate crimes also play a role. Affordable housing can offer a safer, more secure alternative, allowing individuals to live without fear of violence or abuse.

Access to Information

Even when shelter spaces are available, some individuals may struggle to access them due to a lack of information. This issue is particularly acute for minors, underrepresented groups, and those with specific needs. For instance, while D.C. has opened its first homeless shelter for the LGBTQ+ community—an excellent initiative—those in need may not be aware of its existence. Affordable housing, combined with comprehensive resource hubs, can ensure that everyone has access to the support they need.

Personal Preferences and Privacy Concerns

Many individuals experiencing homelessness have personal reasons for avoiding shelters. Privacy, autonomy, and the desire to avoid communal living are significant factors. Affordable housing provides a dignified and private living space, addressing these concerns and offering a stable environment where individuals can rebuild their lives.
