According to the latest report by the Government of Canada, there were 518 emergency shelters with 18,467 beds available as of 2022. Despite over 100,000 individuals experiencing homelessness that year, the average shelter occupancy was only 88.6%, not reaching full capacity.
While shelters play a crucial role in providing immediate relief, many individuals face challenges that prevent them from using these facilities. This highlights the urgent need for affordable housing, which not only alleviates the burden on shelters but also provides individuals with a safe, stable environment.
